3.4 Ghz desktop on Vista 32 home. Wired to modem which also works laptop by wifi.
Desktop stopped accessing internet. I changed to later talktalk modem hoping that would solve the problem.
New modem works laptop ok but with an hour help from uk lady she could not work out what was@wrong with desktop. I later tried a wifi usb on it and that shows as working but will not access signals.
I fiind a setting where discover other networks was off but if I try to change it to on it just goes it nto a?permenent wait.
The printer driver has also been lost.
AVG free can find no virus!
Any ideas
Tony

Go back to the original connections, as that's obviously not the problem.
Once it's all connected and running, on the desktop, click start and type CMD, then press enter.
In the command box that opens, type ipconfig /all (make sure you get the space) and press enter.
On the title bar at the top of the window, right-click and select Edit - Select All.
Then right-click again and select Edit - Copy.
Open a reply here, right click in the empty field and select paste.

We did that or something very similar with the ISP's lady and it did not solve the problem.
Can you or anyone else suggest whats wrong with the setting that does not take effect and may be whats preventing finding wlans?
And whats gone wrong that has caused these problems as well as losing the printer driver.

Do what Richie says, but also run the ipconfig /all command on the laptop that works and paste the results here too. The command won't fix the problem, but it'll give us a basic idea of the network configuration on both machines. What firewall are you using on the desktop?

My brother had similar issue. In his case he accidently upgraded to avg full and the avg firewall stopped his connection working properly. The uninstall avg pgm fails so currently researching ways to remove it.
It's a long shot but thought I'd offer it in case it was the same thing!!!

AVG RemoverAVG Remover utility removes all parts of AVG installation on your computer, including registry items, installation and user files on your disk, etc. AVG Remover is the last option to be used in case the AVG uninstallation / repair installation process has failed repeatedly. http://www.avg.com/download-tools
