The 25m of cable to the outbuilding runs through the flower beds about an inch below soil height. Bare in mind there was no earth bonding at all in this house and all the rewireable fuses were fitted with 30amp fuse wire. The sockets in the living room were wired with 5 amp lighting cable.

What..I've always used paper clips in place of the fuse in those old fuse boards...if that failed replace with a nail..

I feel sorry for you, wouldn't it be better to rebuild the whole house?  I do admire you for carrying the work out though. I look forward to seeing pics when you've redone it all. Makes me shudder, thinking people actually do this! (What the previous owner did!) Good luck. BenjaminS
