Hi all, I'm new to this site so apologies if this question has already been asked. I have a 240 volt makita die grinder & i would like to reduce the spindle speed to accomadate a rotary wire brush, which is not suitable for the current spindle speed of my die grinder.

Is there such an accessory available in the UK that i can just plug into the mains supply then plug my die grinder into the speed reducer?

Many thanks in anticipation, RoyH

You should be able to find one, they were used before variable speed electric drills became commonplace.

I couldn't find a ready-made unit, but if you can get it made up, here is the circuit for the thing you need.

You can use a dimmer (rated to handle the power) for this purpose. Don't expect to get the full motor torque when using it though.

I have a dimmer from Lidl, Paget Trading model E4246, rated at 150W incandescent/300W halogen, but nothing specified for an inductive load.

The link in my signature should work, but it doesn't, I'll have to ask UHM. The dimmer I have is a plug in type, I expect that bigger ones are made.

The link you posted does not work, perhaps the url is incorrect?

Your signature link was not working because-after you edit the signature, you have to untick the checkbox that says "do not automatically parse url's" or similar. On the old version of phpbb you did not have to do this, but you do on the newer version

I bought a second hand 8A variac 30 years ago for £1. I've used it over the years with all sorts of drills etc. and it still works as good as new.

Try Ebay. I see there's an 8A variac going with a present bid price of £5.10. Click

thank you very much for the help, but it looks a tad tired & rather bulky, so i will hang on in the hope that something more streamlined becomes available.

please dont think i'm being ungrateful.

I'd like to be able to slow down my bench drill, but dimmers/variacs wouldn't work with an induction motor. :cb
