It became a legal requirement for any business working on gas to register with CORGI in 1991..

A Good DIYer should manage to do safe gas work in their own home, but as to whether it meets regs is another matter.
Its not against the law to do Gas work on a DIY basis if you're competent. This is the grey area! (You may have to prove competency in court, if you make a serious error!)
Corgi States you must be registered to do gas work as part of a business.

All new boiler & appliance installs must be notified to Building control, and if your not registered to self certify, then it must be inspected by Building Control.

Consumer Information

CORGI is recognised as the UK's gas safety watchdog. 9 out of 10 people know the CORGI name and that it stands for safety and professionalism.

As CORGI moves forward our goal is to make more people safer in their home and at work when they use different types of trades people.

In order to do this we keep a register of professionals who can carry out work safely and competently in your home. You must always ask to see the CORGI ID card of anyone who comes into your home. This card tells you clearly what types of work the person is able to carry out for you.

CORGI believes in PREVENTION - “one death from carbon monoxide is one death too many”. We are working hard to improve standards in industry and help train and educate the trades people that come into your home to improve safety. We also carry out numerous consumer safety campaigns telling the public to:

Always use registered installers
Always check the ID card
Install an audible, battery operated carbon monoxide alarm

Facts

There are 20 million gas users in the UK.

CORGI was founded in 1970.

It became a legal requirement for any business working on gas to register with CORGI in 1991.

CORGI is an abbreviation of Council for Registered Gas Installers.

Each year in the UK, around 30 people die from Carbon Monoxide poisoning caused by faulty gas appliances.

Carbon Monoxide is caused by “incomplete combustion” when an appliance (gas, coal, wood, oil) isn’t working correctly.
Carbon Monoxide is known as the “silent killer” because you can’t see, smell or taste it.

CORGI’s gas safety advice is:only use a CORGI registered installer, have your appliances checked annually, never block ventilation, check your installer’s CORGI ID card
Know the symptoms of CO poisoning: drowsiness, nausea, headaches and stomach aches.

Yes, the number of deaths due to CO is probaly up since Corgi was stated in 1970, but then the increase in number of users must be considered too!
