Yes is the short answer, to answer your next question read the following:-
Ceramic, Porcelain and most man made tiles you have the following options:-
1/ Secure the existing floorbords to the joists and replace/repair any damaged areas. Overply with 12mm WBP plywood screwed every 150mm.
2/ Remove the existing floorboards back to the joists and replace with 25mm WBP plywood fixing noggins where boards join across joists.
For Stone, marble or natural products the floor need to be a little more rigid:-
1/ Secure the existing floorbords to the joists and replace/repair any damaged areas. Overply with 18mm WBP plywood screwed every 150mm.
2/ Secure the existing floorbords to the joists and replace/repair any damaged areas. Glue and screw 12mm Aquapanel to the existing floor using rapidset felxible tile adhesive and Aquapanel screws, this gives the same rigidity as 18mm ply with a smaller increase in height.
3/ Remove the existing floorboards back to the joists and replace with 25mm WBP plywood fixing noggins where boards join across joists. _________________

you can use any brand adhesive as long as it is flexible. i am using bal rapidset flexible at the moment but also used palace and dunlop. with dunlop you have to ad a flexible additive which they will sell with it if you ask.
there are some brands that do it out of a tub now like topfix but have never been confident enough to try them. |

Most of the tub mixes take ages to go off.
As panlid said........flexible sticky, and don't forget flexible grout |

When I tile over any form of timber I always use cement sheeting ( we call it hardiflex) and fix to the timber.
I have noticed that you guys use a 12 mm plywood would this not rot out over a period of time even if it was TANKED???
cheers

In a very wet area it would. But then in a very wet area there shouldn't be existing wood floorboards to start with, so really it's a mute point. _________________

| You can, but it's a gutsy try. Hardwood flexes, expands and contracts with temp. humidity and wear. Those are things you DONT want when setting tile. If you really really want to try this without removing the hardwood, it will take some money and time. |
