I am installing two celing lights in my kitchen. The lights are metal and exactly the same and the box insists they need earthing.

One installed no problem at all ie there was an earth wire from the ceiling. However, for the 2nd one, there is no earth wire from the ceiling.

It has been suggested to me that as the first one has an earth, then maybe the 2nd one doesnt need one?

It seems odd to me that there isn't one, as its a fairly new house.

Any suggestions on a way forward?

If the MI's say it needs an earth, it needs an earth!! any chance of a pic of the wiring at the second installation point?

They both need an earth wire connecting.

It has not been cut off where it exits the cable outer sheath has it?

You might have to run an earth wire from the light fitting that has an earth to the one that hasn't.

fully agree with the above, whoever said to you it doesn't need one did not have a clue what they were talking about.
