Hi all, hope someone can stop me pulling any more hair out :cb My problem is that my broadband recently stopped working on all but the master socket. Telephones work in any extension, with no sign of interference. Yes, ADSL filters are in place on all extensions, I have tried 3 different modems, and have checked as best as I am able, the wiring in the master socket. I have unplugged all phones, but nothing works. Does anyone have any ideas why my phones work perfectly, but I cannot get my ADSL modem to work anywhere other than the master socket? Many thanks

Yep, replaced every one of them, one at a time...no difference. Thanks for the advice though.

Did the modem work BEFORE?

Have you rerouted any of the extension wires lately?

Have you added any additional cables recently? - particularly close to the main BT socket?

Are the extensions wired in series i.e. cabled from one to the next? (not a good idea, each should go back to the main box)

Check that there are no other electrical cables running alongside the extension cable. Cross-interference will stop it working.

Yep, modems worked before (have tried 3 of them now).

No extensions or other cabled added recently, or moved.

Downstairs extensions are wired in series, with upstairs on another series, but both these series wired separately to the main box. They were wired professionally about 7 years ago.

Thanks for the tips

Problem would therefore appear to be external. Perhaps 'they' have cut the signal level?

If you are that bothered I would suggest you get some cable and make up various additional lengths and try them successively longer until you reach the point at which the signal 'stops'.

The actual signal ampitude is set by BT at the exchange. I realise this level is supposed to be 'x' at the users end but unless BT do the actual measurement I doubt whether you'll have the equipmment to do this yourself.

Getting BT in to measure it won't cost anything if they find a fault but if they don't then you'll be liable for the call out fee as a minimum.

Anyway, why are you bothered? Fit the router at the main socket and either run CAT5 to the other PC's or get a wireless router. Most people have a router at a fixed location anyway - they hardly move it around according to where the PC is plugged in!

Guess i'll be calling BT in then. I am concerned, because if I plug modem/router into master socket, I have no phones/minicom. As soon as I plug front cover into master socket to gain phones, I lose internet. Difficult to live without either! Was unaware that BT could have adjusted amplitude though, so will ask them to check, cheers.

Sounds like you need someone to take a look at it, because that isn't right at all :|

Are you saying that you can only have your Router OR Phone in the master socket but not both?

If you are using your master socket only it should be wired like this:

Are you using a splitter to run the extensions? Is the splitter plugged into the master socket and running your two extensions? If so this does not need a filter, the filter needs to be plugged in where a device actually plugs into a socket, not where the extension plugs in.

Are your extensions simple two wires or has the engineer carried three around the house? The third is the Bell wire and this can be removed (and will actually help your broadband speed)
