DIY,

2 weeks in and we're a week behind schedule, Cowlins are a H&S nightmare, lorry drivers aren't allowed to climb onto the backs of their lorries (unless they are attached by landyard to their Hiabs). We are digging all holes by hand in case we hit a service. Gloves and eye protection are to be worn at all times (even if you can't see through the lenses if it's raining). Permits to dig, created the day before any activity takes place, the Subbie must attend the site office the morning of the dig, drawings are produced and copied (up to 7 drawings), it is signed, copied and hung on the wall whilst the original is taken to the job, by now it's 9am! The area to be dug is now CAT scanned by Subbie, then Cowlins come and scan again with a new box of tricks we have (am waiting for the 7 hour training on this bit of kit) We have only 2 guys trained at present on our 2 sites which are about 1 mile apart. Digging commences, we (Cowlins) re-scan every 200mm of spoil removed. We don't have the resources to have an Engineer standing by to scan every 200mm, I am feeling it for the Groundwork Subbie, they ain't gonna make any money! Come 4.30pm or so, the Subbie Foreman goes back the mile or so to the office to get the permit signed off, after phoning me to ensure that the work has finished. Next day the whole thing starts again. So far, i am only dealing with the Groundworkers, Tree Surgeons and hoarding guys, permits for all!
Now I know that this is all for the workers protection, but god it's frustrating, currently we are only putting in a 3m wide trench running maybe half a mile to take the new services (through student enfested water, who nick my signs and cones every night which I have to replace every morning). But hayho, the monies fantastic and it's a job and I'm grateful just to be working again!
