Looking at the deal that screwfix has on ,the 700watt gsb1600re and the bosch detector dmf10 zoom. The drill looks good but not sure about the detector, i know uhm uses his a lot for testing electrics but there seems to be conflicting reports that it is not that great at detecting timber studs and pipes so i am not sure if it is worth buying.

My bosch detector didn't pick up timber studs I was looking for, but it was accurate enough when set to metal that it DID pick up the plasterboard screws with enough accuracy that I found the studs that way.

I have the DMf 10 zoom and I am not sure if it works or not.

I only really use it to find live wires etc.

When I get the garage cleaned out I'll be giving it a proper test.

Well, I managed to get it tested over the weekend and I was not impressed with it.

There are lots of videos on youtube promoting this detector, which are all the same video from Bosch with a different website name embedded into the video.

I have tried it several times in the house and could never find studs with it so I built a small stud wall in the garage and tested it there. It found a metal pipe no problem, but it could not find a stud or a live wire and so it's useless IMHO

The easiest way I have found to find studs is locate the screw heads using a strong magnet-

I've had my POS Bosch DMF 10 for a while but found it quite useless for anything other than balancing the weight of my tool bag!

I've read the manual and found this......

Quote:
When the measuring indicator f continuously shows an amplitude even
though there is no metal object in the vicinity of the measuring tool, the
measuring tool can be calibrated manually. For this, remove all objects
in the vicinity of the measuring tool (including wrist watches or rings of
metal) and hold the measuring tool up in the air. With the measuring tool
switched off, press both the “on/off” button 7 and the wood-detection
button 5 until the illuminated ring 1 lights up red and green at the same
time. Then release both buttons. When the calibration process was successful,
the measuring tool will start over after a few seconds and is then
ready for operation.

Just tried it and it seem it is finding the studs in the wall that it was confused about before. Will try it in anger tomorrow looking for ceiling joists.

Go on, go find your piece of crap and see if it turns into a polished turd?

I calibrated mine before I used it, but it seemed to make no difference
