another way would have been to contact the owner of this site and ask to offer discounts to members, and some competition prizes etc........then you would have been welcomed, maybe

I've nothing to gain from it, just helping a friend spread the word, if it wasn't of any use to anyone I wouldn't bother.

thanks for the advice, I'll try that approach souns a better idea than alienating the regulars
