Hi Sorry if this has been asked before or explained before.
I have just installed a new 9.5Kw shower in my bathroom (there was no shower in there to begin with) I have run 10mm 2 core plus earth to the 2 pole 45A pull switch then down through the wall and ceiling to my "power cupboard" where the current consumer unit is. I have also run a separate 10mm dedicated Earth to the same location all cables run the same routes as all the other power cables in the house.
I have bought myself a "shower Consumer unit" (The consumer unit has a 63Amp RCD and a 40A MCB) and wired the 10mm leads to this. I have also wired some 16mm tails out of the consumer unit which are currently hanging waiting for installation into the mains.
The Dedicated earth is also waiting for connection.
My question is this, I obviously need to get this certified and connected. Does anybody know if this is possible now I have gotten the wires all run? And if so is there anybody in the Nottingham area that would be willing to do this or can be recommended not to rip me off.
or would I be looking at a fresh run of cable by an installer?
any advice greatfully recieved. |

hi pslawrence  to the forum.
to the rule you should have notified BC that you were going to undertake this work or asked a sparky to come and inspect both your 1st fix & 2nd fix to certify it. as it stands now, needing it connected by a sparky will be slightly different.
a lot of us will not use materials supplied by you, not as a some would believe, because we make money off them, but because we tend to use what we know is good and not some cheap crappy DIY make. i don't actually charge extra for materials and i never have.
if you require an honest answer the most honest i can give you is that whoever you get to certify it & connect it, they will probably charge you a silly price because they know you can't certify it yourself & they will be the one taking the risk that it's all installed properly because they didn't see that done.
if you wish to get it certified and connected, i suggest you look for a "Napit" registered sparky as they can certify other peoples work. (but usually when both stages of install are seen).
just incase you see "Derby" in my profile, yes i am from Derby but i don't work at Nottingham. i work within 10 minutes from home max.
a rough price guide would be: -
2 x supply & install Henley blocks
1 x test circuit
1 x connect tails and power up
1 x supply test cert
and if all that took 2 hours including getting there and completing the work, then maybe you would be charged between £60-£80
i just sit here and ponder the thought of a mystery...i wonder who knew those cables got connected & installed?  |

Hi Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the reply also.
I have already spoken to one or two sparkys who have said they would not touch it as its already in place.
Ill look at talkin to a "napit" registered sparky tomorrow.

I concur with Rich 100%
I am with NAPIT and would probably sign it off and file it with you LABC for you as checking the cable run of 10 mm t/e is far easier that 2.5 or 1.5 t/e so able to check "1st and 2nd fix" quite easily. Sadly I am down in Hants and the idea of driving 'up north' is not that appealing especially with the M1 at the moment with its 40MPH average speed cameras.
Look up at the NAPIT web site and contact a sparky local to you he should be able to help.

i too am Napit but for reasons stated i just cba to drive to Notts.

| It is also worth mentioning that you can pay the 'regularisation charge' to your LABC (which I think is about 20% more than what you'd have paid if you notified the LABC prior to the work) and they or their contractors will come and inspect your work. |
