Hi all, I know that your not permitted to move your BT main socket and wouldn't for a minute break any rules but say for instance somone did.
Say they moved it from the lounge to the bedroom above and they cut the wire shorter as there was alot of excess. Then for instance there wife decided to change her mind again and want it back in the lounge, could somone put a longer length of external wire from the little box on there fascia board back to the main socket in the lounge? Would there be any risks? and what sort of wire would they need to purchase?
And, in the screwfix catalogue there are different types of internal phone wire i.e 2pair 4core, 3pair 6core and 4pair which is best for using on other extension sockets in the house.
This of course is all hypothetical!!! Wink

What you should have done is left the master where it was and run a slave upstairs.

Of course hypothetically you could reverse that arrangement Wink

The reason why this was done was that I was told that my modem should be plugged in to the master socket so as the computer was in the bedroom i thought i would move the master socket.
Two months later when the computer packs up, we get a wireless laptop which is mostly used in the lounge as is the xbox 360 (which needs to be plugged into the master socket to go online) so hence the reason for wanting to move it again.
If only i'd put the excess wire under the floor boards Bang Head

have you actually tried using the extension socket for it and it hasn't worked, or you are just going by the instructions?

I personally doubt very much if it should matter

Haven't tried the extension yet, was under the impression from a friend that you needed it all to come off the master socket for full strength on the broadband?

I guess you may loose a few KBs?

Here is my suggestion ...

Plug in your router into the master socket, and then run a speedtest at various times of the day
This is a good test - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ - there are others.

So this for a couple of days and note the results (if you register (for free) on the above site, it will keep a record for you, as long as you login before running the test)

Then move the router to the lounge where the extension is and repeat the tests (at same time of day)

Compare the two and if the tests are within 10% of each other, don't worry about which socket to use - there is enough varience in day to day broadband speeds that your speed could vary by upto 20% easily!

PS - don't forget to use the ADSL line filters on each phone point
