I drained my CH system (done many times before). Filled system and bleed the downstairs rads as normal. All downstairs rads are letting water however can't get any air from upstairs rads.

The bolier cuts out after a while as I suspect overheating.

I have bleed the pump.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you checked the air vet are not blocked.

Take a bleed screw out and clear the hole with a pin

I'm still getting not air or water from any of the upstairs rads when trying to blleed them. Downstairs are full of water so are OK. I have bleed the pump in the airing cupboard.

The bolier runs for a few mins then I assume overheats so I have to press the reset button.

Any thoughts on how to bleed upstairs appreciated.

As you have drained a refilled with no problems in the past I would be inclined to drain it out and start again, make sure you open the air vent to completely empty the system.

Check the header tank is clean and refilling, to check the cold feed is not blocked.

Thank you, I was thinking I should try again ie drain and refill again. When you say open the air vent fully I take it you mean the drain tap?

When I fill the system again should I close all of the rad vents?

I was thinking of running the pump whilst I drain the system slowly, is this worth a try?

The air vents on the radiators should be open as you drain and closed when you fill.

Manually open any Motorized valve.

The boiler/pump should be off, as you can suck air in, depending on pump position.

I drained the system but not much water came out. When I went to the header tank it was full of water!

Looks like you have a blocked cold feed in that case.

Can you post a pic showing where it connects to the system.

Had this a few times myself. The way I got/typically get it cleared:

Pump will probably have more than 1 speed. Sometimes changing the speed of the pump (and back again) will clear the airlock. You'll soon know as you'll hear the water flow.

Bleed the pump. Undo the large nylon (or brass or whatever) screw at front of pump and see if you get a trickle. Could be hot, especially if pump running and no water in it.

Look for drain valves near to the air vent vessel (cant remember technical term - but a large - well, 3 to 4'' diameter copper vessel with 3 or so of your pipes connecting) and open that....(or even blow down it - as in 1 case I had). Anyway, that may help....and even banging the air vent vessel can help.

The latter is not the most technical but seems to work in most cases when the obvious points have been checked 1st.
