Hi I've been looking into investing in some stilts and have decided on THESE.
You can buy them over here but can save a lot of money getting them shipped from the states.
My questions are...
A.) Does anybody have these or similar, what do you think?
B.) Has anybody had tools shipped in from the U.S before and had customs charges?
C.) How long before I fall off and break my neck?
Cheers bremner |

You have to be careful, if you end up paying import duty they will work out very expensive.
Are these stilts difficult to use? |

Thanks for your replies, only problem is the website selling them sent me a shipping quote which was $174 (£87) the good thing is I'll have to order more to make it worth while

Never tried them myself but it would save stepping up and down of a bench when doing ceilings, the only problem I can forsee is getting the stuff off the spot board.
These stilts are supposed to be the best availible as the springs on the feet mimick the way we walk, but the downside to wearing stilts is when you touch something with them you cant feel it like you would with your feet so its very easy to trip when wearing them.

Why I asked is years ago I imported a electronic item from the states worth £18 and was charged £11 by customs wanted to know if the charges would be different on non-electrical items. Like you say if the savings still out weigh the charges then I'll put an order in.

It should cost you $80 ish (£42) to get them to your door, the ones youare after are around £22-250 in this country so not difficult to work out the pros and cons.
I saved £100 on a laser level, and they gave me foc a real leather case which I wouldn't have got in good old england.
There a welsh guy I know uses them for dry lining, frame ceilings etc, and you have to be impressed to see him work. _________________ Scruff

The kind of charges you may get landed with are:
VAT at 17.5%
Customs Duty - varies, but could be around 10%
Handling Charge - around £10 for the post office to open it and tell you what you ordered.
And the shipping charges as well of course.
So if say the gear is 1/2 the price that you pay in the UK, even if you do get these charges, still probably quids in _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. |

Take it as a rough guide, 30% on top of purchase price. It's still been worth while for a couple of tools for me including a laser level (less than 1/2 the price from USA). _________________ Building Materials Sourcing
