Hi,

just a quick question.

I am replacing a ceiling light and i have 3 sets of wires: 2 sets are red, black, earth but the third is red, red, earth.

I'm happy to connect the first 2 but i'm at a loss with the third.

Your help/advice would be appreciated.

Hi Hamish,

This should be simple.

It sounds like they have used twin red and earth for the switched live wires, instead of sleeving the black wire on twin core and earth-

Some sparks do use this instead of twin core and earth as it saves sleeving the black wire.

I have attached a picture of what you probably have-

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.
The fitting on the new light has Live/ earth/ neutral so, to be clear, i can treat one of the red on the third cable i mentioned as a black?

scratch

The two red wires from the same cable will be the permanent live going to the switch and the switched live coming back from the switch.

Take a look here-

http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/diy/electrics/light_fitting/changing_light_fitting.htm

But instead of having a cable going to the switch with the permanent live in red and switched live in black (sheathed red) you have a permanent live in red and a switched live in red also.
