Generally seems to work ok, but the cutlery is always smeared (when dry) and the crockery has a strange "fishy-type" smell. Any clues?

Check the filters first, give them a good clean.

Then put the washer on the hottest cycle with soap whilst its empty!
This should will help clean through the plumpling and filters.

If you're getting smears on the cutlery it could be hard water residue, make sure you have enough salt in the machine.

After you've cleaned it and checked the salt, if you're still getting a smell, try a different soap and/or try a hotter setting.
