Hi,
I haven't been using my boiler at all for the last two months (at all, not once, except for the blue flame showing at the front of the boiler).
Still, over two months i've managed to use 20 units of gas.
Should I be worried? I know my boiler is absolutely ancient (Vaillant VCW Sine 18 T3) so could it just be that on the way out?
Please advise - i'm getting a little worried now!
Thanks. |

It's surprising how much the pilot will actually burn.
What are the units, ft or m _________________ Scruff |

A pilot light reduces the Sedbuk rating of a boiler by four percent. |

That's a lot of gas (220kw) ish, but no an impossible amount, I always turn the pilot off through the summer for that reason.
Perhaps it's time to consider a new boiler. _________________ Scruff |

but if i turned the pilot out, wouldn't that mean i couldn't get hot water on demand (even though this is hypothetical, as i haven't been using the boiler at all throughout the summer, not for hot water or heating)?
New boiler? Perhaps. Damn!
Thanks. |

Yes, you could turn the pilot off during long shutdowns, and obviously you need it for hot water or heating.
As for the new boiler, you need to consider the cost saving of the fuel x capital outlay.
Example, new boiler £1500.00, gas saving £200.00 year.
As you can see the savings of a new boiler is not good from a financial position, to get the maximum benefit it should only be a consideration if the existing boiler breaks down and or becomes unreliable. _________________ Scruff |
