Strapping on brickwork, plasterboard fixed to strapping using ordinary wood screws, 3mm skim plaster on top. When I queried the screw type with the builder he said 'It'll be fine'. Six months later there are several screw heads that have popped through the plaster.

Assuming if he's used proper drywall screws I wouldn't be having this problem, I'm just wondering what actually causes the 'wrong type of screw' to pop.

if you are saying the the heads have pushed through the skim then it must be movement off the head outwards which would mean the plasterboard wasn't touching the frame when screwed in ??

Makes sense.

I wonder what would cause the movement then? Things drying out?

This only ever happens with boarding wood. Never on metal.

I think the wood contracts and expands, causing the screws to move a little and multifinish in't very flexible.

Hi,

sometimes happens if screws have not gone through joists and someone has been too lazy to unscrew the screws back out again.

Cheers, John
