Hi

We have a good plumber that we have used a lot in the past and has generally been very cheap. We're looking at getting a new bathroom installed and the quote he has given us seems very expensive. Can anyone tell us if its in the right ballpark?

Replace bath, sink and toilet.
Fit shower (and buy and install shower pump).
Fit towel rail with summer heating kit (and run electric supply to new power point). This might also include adding a wooden support in the wall.
Move shaver socket in bathroom.
Install new light.
Fit cupboards and worktop.

He will be providing a summer heating kit for the shower, shower pump, organise a skip etc. Not included: any plastering or tiling, and we have already bought the suite. He estimates this will be about 5 or 6 days work and is quoting £2500. We'd been thinking in the region of £2000.

Any thoughts appreciated!

It is always hard to pass comment without seeing the room and understanding the work to be done - sometimes a written description is not enough to give feedback. The best way forward is to bet some more quotes and take it from there.

My daughter has just had this done:

strip out old suite,
strip old tiling,
remove large cupboard in corner and make good,
re-plaster walls and ceiling,
supply & install recessed lighting, shaver outlet & light,
supp & inst new toilet, shower, bath, basin plus all plumbing,
supp & inst extract fan,
supp & inst tiling to half-height,
included repositionong the drains for all utilities as the room was remodelled.
remove all waste.

Total was around £5000

its not a massive room just average really.

daughter now needs to re-paint and fit flooring.

they had three quotes and chose the middle one.

i am in the middle of doing a bathroom for a clever guy woth a great international job.
but he just hasnt got a clue what is entailed in doing a bathroom the right way.
do you know what is entailed?

No I don't know exactly what is entailed which is why I was posting.

No I wouldn't go with someone I don't know if I got quote for 2K - albeit 20% being a significant percentage.

No I won't just be getting anyone in to give me a cheap quote, but I will likely now be going to another plumber I've used before and getting a quote from him.

I do have an idea of how of much work this guy has done before for me, and at what cost which is why I was surprised at the quote - I'm just posting to get a feeling for what this sort of thing would cost. Like I said - is he in the ballpark?

A breakdown of costs would be helpful.

Generally, customers don't have a clue how much things cost, they only see what they want to in a Quote and will naturally assume that the tradesman is ripping them off with the labour costs when quite often they don't see just how much money is spent on bits and pieces.

Thanks ... that's exactly what we were thinking of getting. We've just got a verbal quote at the moment. As you said, I suspect that the costs of materials is more than we think.

To give you an idea of cost, I usually charge £4k per Bathroom, including the lighting and all materials except for the Bathroom Suite and tiles
