Hi guys,

I'm pretty soon going to embark on a career change and get myself qualified as an electrician (well, domestic installer to be precise) with a view to working for myself, just doing the bog-standard home electrical work, rewiring, adding sockets etc...

Thanks to trial and error, as well as a lot of advice from guys on here (cwplastering in particular!), I'm now fairly competent with the trowel, can certainly make good the odd chase in plaster, stick up and skim some board etc.

I know plastering is 90% skill and practice, but I've been thinking maybe I should get myself a formal qualification, mainly so I have an extra bit of paper to show clients.

What's sort of thing should I be looking at doing to show I can do basic plastering? I'm guessing my local college would be my best bet...

Where did you guys learn? Got formal qualifications, or just years of experience?

Cheers.

I find that alot of plasterers dont have there papers for whatever reason. I work with one of the best plasterers in scotland alot, he doesn't have papers, just a guy that has been on site for more years than ive been alive. Some company's may be apprehensive but most give you a job to do and see if its up to par. If your doing work and getting paid from a company/customer and every ones happy, i dont see the problem. Are you committed to doing a course, im pretty sure you need to do four years at college, wouldn't be right if some guy goes to college for four year and you come in one day, plaster a wall and get papers.

i find the public don't care about qualifications or skills, they barely even care about quality of work now. if you are the cheapest then the jobs yours.
