Will be doing some plastering over artex and wasn't sure if the the artex I will be going over is old enough to have asbestos included in it.

Does anyone know if there is any way of telling the tell tell signs as to whether artex has this nasty old stuff in it?

The house is about 16-17 years old if that helps.

Also does anyone have any experience of using Wickes bonding agent as opposed to general pva and if this helps?

Hi PMG,

welcome to the forum Wink

If the house is only 16-17 years old it is unlikely to have asbestos in the artex, but there is only one real way to find out and that is to have it tested!

As you are covering it I would not bother and would just bond it and then skim over it.

One of the plasterers on here swears by wicks bonding agent and he says it is much better than PVA. I can't remember who Embarassed I think it was andy-p-

Which artex pattern are you going to be skimming over?

it's stipple, so not as bad as some patterns I beleive.

The house was built by some housing organisation with several houses on plot so would imagine that they would have used some sort of product that conforms with health and safety etc.

Some of the stipple does stick out a bit but not too bad. I have allowed for double the quantity of multi-finish as I have heard that this will be required. What sort of depth generally should I be going to when using multi-finish over artex?

You might be best hacking off the high points so you don't have to apply a too think amount of finish

Yep its me uhm! Smile Did a stippled ceiling this week but used pva instead Shocked
It was a time thing!

Wot i do for artex stipple is-
Use a floor scraper to take of high spots, then apply either wicks bonding agent (2hrs to cure) or pva 3-1
If you use pva go on it when tacky.
Mix up 1st coat a bit thicker than usual so you can cover the artex.
When 1st coat is on let it firm up then flatten it and fill any hollows and clean ceiling/wall edges.
stick on 2nd coat as normal.
Thats wot i do over artex, other spreads got their own way. Its a case of wot suits you
Hope this helps

Hi pmg,

Have the artex tested take a small sample ie fingernail size put in an air tight bag, label with name, date, and type ie ceiling artex, speak to a local asbestos contractor to see who they use for there testing or speak to your local council (building services) as they have to manage all there properties with asbestos and they may have there own testing facilities, We use a company in Watford called Vintec cost's about £15-20 per sample. And please do not scrape or sand the artex as this is what causes fibre release you will here many people say that there is minimal asbestos in artex which true but the amounts are inconsistent due to the nature of mixing.
We have had all the down stairs ceilings removed in our house by a specialist contractor (cost a fortune) but upstairs i have boarded over the top and had re - skimmed.
Hope this helps

As further query on this topic - as a lot of artex has been painted over do you lads of much experience recon its a good idea to score it before bonding; to key it better? I just have a fear of the paint layer holding up the weight of the skim coat.

I wouldn't score it on the off chance that it contains asbestos.

You can PVA over a painted wall and skim it without scoring it and so it should bond ok. If you did want to score it then I'd get it tested for asbestos first Wink

pre 83/84 could contain asbestos so if the house is only 17 years old you should be well in the clear!!

the floor scraper is an excellent tip, i have used one many times
