Help! Can anyone give me some advice please?
I have recently bought a house (1960's) and am stripping the walls of all the old wallpaper, with a view to getting them replastered. The problem I have is that the walls have never been skimmed and the previous owners wallpapered straight onto the plasterboard. Now I am trying to remove it, the bottom layer of wallpaper has stuck to the board and its tearing off the top layer of the plasterboard and exposing the cardboard layer.

I have had one plasterer say that this cant be replastered as the new plaster will fall off. Is this the case? Cant extra PVA be added to seal it?

I dont really want to go through putting up new plasterboard as it will have to be added on top as I have 'laminate' walls which need to be completely removed (which I really dont want to do) and if I add it on top it will mean refitting door frames etc.

Any advice gratefully received!

Hi Jessicajc,

If you can remove the wallpaper without tearing off the plasterboard backing ie the brown papered side of the plasterboard then you should be ok but i feel this will be quite a tricky if not impossible task if the wallpaper is stuck down well

Thanks for replying. We cant get the paper off without taking off the plasterboard backing, as the last layer of wallpaper as adhered to it.

Do you think you can plaster over this if we have exposed the base layer of plasterboard?

Not really Jessica as this is partly what gives plasterboard it's structural strength and if it get's knocked it will just collapse in on itself, personally i would removeand re-board then re-skim, failling that i would board over the top and extend the door linings with some planed timber ie door stop.
Hope this helps
