I would like to paint my already white composite front door black. Can anyone help with the best type of paint to use? I know I'll need to use a primer.

What finish and what colour do you want. Matt, Satin, Gloss, white?

The important thing then is the first coat of paint (primer) which must be capable on gripping on a difficult surface. Crown Trade makes "Grip extreme fast drying primer" see ... http://www.crowntrade.co.uk/Products/PrimersandPreparation/Pages/default.aspx. The brush can be washed afterwards with water.

Then ... if you want to go to black you probably need 3 coats of Satin (I would use oil based). Satin does not need an undercoat although a dark undercoat would help.

The above can only be bought from Crown decorators' centres or independent paint retailers.

You need a good brush (Hamilton perfection) so you make sure you don't get more hair than paint on the door, and some white spirit for cleaning up the brush afterwards.

===========================

There are other makes of oil based satin, check your local DIY shop. Check the info. on the crown site for the primer I mentioned and you will get the idea of what you need as a first coat of primer. It is not ordinary primer for new wood that you need, but primer for difficult surfaces (tiles, melamine etc).

Cheers

PS. International made/makes specialist paints. Example: http://www.international-paints.co.uk/products/info/black_satin.jsp but the site does not give enough information to know if you can use the paint straight on or you need a primer.
