I need to paint my garden railings and saw Wilko are selling hammerite 250ml for £5 but I read on here hammerite is no longer any good.

What's the best metal paint for painting rust surfaces?

Hello Argyll
Not sure there is a 100% reliable one, think preparation is the key rust has to be removed by wirebrushing/sanding then wiped down with a degreaser and metal primed for good results, even if the paint is sound it would need sanding/priming to provide a key and get rid of the surface dirt/grease etc
Wilko have a red oxide primer
https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-red-o ... /p/0189101
so if you only have a small amount to do that would be cost effective
The hammerite will fly of the shelf so I would order online and click and collect before it goes
Another alternative if the rust is bad after rubbing down what about jenolite rust convertor or kurust before going straight to a top coat they have that at halfords
nearest at wilko is loctite rust remedy
https://www.wilko.com/en-uk/loctite-rus ... /p/0082597
https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paint ... urust-90ml

I quite like it in a spray can but apart from that it's horrid, it does say straight on rust I think but you'd obviously remove as much as possible. You could always use the oil based Allcoat .

I quite like rustoleum metal paints. Easy to work, paint direct on rust and available in loads of colours

Thanks guys.

The price at Wilko's is back to normal now so I missed it. You snooze you lose. :cb

However I bought 5 litres of Rust-Oleums grey primer so that will keep me busy for now. :thumbright:
