After breaking my duck with me welcome post I thought it was time to stop lurking and ask my first question, so, here goes.........brace yourselves Shocked

If you read my welcome post you'll see i've just started up and I've been lucky in that through my nefarious social activities I've started doing some work for a lady that runs a local property company. Company has about 60 properties mainly victorian/edwardian ranging from small terraced cottages to the bloody town hall!

Anyhoo, she's in the process of renovating them after years of neglect; her poor old mum used to run the company and she came from the make do and mend generation so in the past twenty years she spent about £15 plus VAT on 'em! The relationship's going well, she's well happy with my work and attitude and she's a pleasure to work for. Pays up on the dot, wants a good job done, is genuinely interested in property and, most important, she listens to advice, so as this could be worth a lot of future money I'm interested in doing quality work without bankrupting myself on materials whilst I'm getting going.

As per your average landlord, colour scheme is predominantly, white ceilings, magnolia walls, white gloss woodwork. So am interested to know what you guys would use in this situation. I've been using Albany paints from Brewers which I like, and trust, but as 10l of vinyl matt magnolia is now £43.70 wondered if there was anything else out there.

I've tried Leylands which is under half the price of Albany and it seems ok. Colour is different, the Leyland is sort of greyer whilst the Albany is more buttery....if that makes sense? Coverage is about the same and both paints are roller friendly so...........ahem! think I've just answered my own question here Rolling Eyes

Ok shut up about the emo oddjob co, what about the undercoat/gloss scenario....what's the verdict there?

My twopence worth, is I always use 'Gliddens' I used to just use the contract white, but then used thier Vinyl matt, just to see what it was like, I was very impressed, then used thier UC, gloss, satin, and I have fallen in love with the paint.

It is made by the same people that make dulux, ICI as was.

I cannot fault it, especially the emulsion, its so thick, that a 10ltr tub when thinned, stretches to at least 12.5 lol. the coverage is very good, and I use it all the time now, except for times when I actually use Dulux.

Thanks bobbie-d.

I've read about Gliddens elsewhere on the site and picked up a Doolux mag in Brewers today and saw the name mentioned. Hmmm....will have to look into this salute

im go between dulux and gliddens, ive used there contract matt white emuslion for a while now, spot on for mist coating, as bobbie says it really thick goes forever, i use for ceiling as normal.

i gave glidden undercoat ago after hearing bobbie say it good stuff and £14.07 per 5L from dulux decorators centre it really good value and i was impressed with it, again it was really thick but covers really nice, im going to give there gloss ago after i use what ive got ( got 5L of crown gloss and 5L of crown water based u/C for £10 bargin!!!)

ive used glidden vinyl stuff but that was years ago cant remember what it was like. i think i pay about £30-35 for 10L of dulux trade magnolia, so i would defo think about having a look round see what deals you can get

Like Telmay says I used Albany Supercover yestrday for the first time (mist coat). Was very impressed with its covering. I paid £17.99 for 12 litres (was on a special offer at the time). Normally use Dulux Trade.

Gliddens for mist coats, Johnstones for everything else - Cova-plus for big colour changes.

Well worth setting up an account with your preferred paint supplier - I wasn't too keen at first what with big bill at the end of the month (and jobs have a nasty habit of missing bill-time). But I have a cash account with Leyland and still get 15%.

Watch out for special offers/sales and bargain weeks - but don't get carried away and buy loads of c**p materials just 'cos they're cheap - been there, done that, regretted it!

Aardvark,
Are you buying from Dundee? If so it is worth while getting the monthly special offers sent to you from GB Decorators Merchants. They sometimes have deals on Johnstones that the Jonstones centre doesn't have.

Thanks for that Cait, yes I do use Dundee for materials, theres nothing paint-wise between there and Aberdeen and its a bit closer and easier. The other advantage with Leyland is I get free delivery Tuesday & Thursday so as long as I get an order in by 5pm its there the next morning.

I've just checked out GB and I'll get on their mailing list, the Leyland Bonanza weeks are pretty good, but I'm sure there are better offers about!
