Hi all,

We are looking into a 4.5x4.5 orangery extension on back of our house to extend the living space.

We’ve had 2 quotes - one from an aluminium frame provider and one from a timber frame specialist.

Both quoted for roughly the same - cavity walls, hardcore, 100mm insulation, 100mm concrete and 50mm screed, floor ready for tiling, allowances for electrics (sockets and spotlights), box guttering connected to existing gully, glass roof lantern - however the main difference is that the aluminium specialist has specified 700mm trench foundations, whereas the timber specialist has specified 1000mm dig with concrete strip foundations 600mm thick with cavity blockwork below ground level.

Is there any major difference and if so which would you prefer?

Cost difference between aluminium and timber is £15k!

There is a shared sewer line across back of house which will need building over. We’re in a Victorian terrace and the sewer pipe runs across 16 houses with a manhole at each end.

Many thanks in advance.
