Can s'one please clarify the following please.
I have bought a new wall light and the cable I have coming out of the wall has only two wires, they are the old black and red. The fitting instructions of the light talk about fixing the earth wire to the marked terminal and the others to the central and end terminal.
All I can see on the light - bulb holder - is two screws (one on each side)which can be loosened and fix the wires in (like we do in a plug for an appliance) and then a copper plate in the middle of the bulb holder with a couple of screw on it. There is no markings or letter or numbers to indicate where which wire should go.
As there is no earth wire, will it be ok if I connect the black and red wire to each of the screw fittings on the outer side of the outside of the bulb holder? There is no separate swith for this wall light and it works of the main switch which lights up the central ceiling light.
An early response will be much appreciated Thanks |

is it a metal fitting? if so you shouldn't connect it at all without an earth.
as for where to connect, it is really hard trying to visualise to what you refer.
if you can post a picture? it would help. |

Thanks for your prompt response.
Yes it has a metal wall fitting and a screw-in light bulb. There is no wires on the light just the bulb holder with a screw fitting for the wires to connect on either side on the outer side and a copper plate with a screw running on the back of where the bulb goes on the outside, and only one cable with one black and one red wire coming out of the wall, which I capped off with a connector and tape when I removed the old light. Sorry not able to send a pic. Cheers |

ahh you mean an outer and an inner connection then.
as it is a metal fitting and you do not have an earth in the cable, it wouldn't be a clever idea to connect it until you get an earth to it. |
