We have an oak tree which we are planning to have removed. The people we have contacted say that the wood will just be made into logs and sold on. This seems a waste. If anyone in the Farnborough, Hampshire area is interested in the wood in return for a contribution towards it being chopped down, please let me know.

If I have read correctly, you have asked someone to REMOVE the tree, and are miffed that its going to be sold. You will get a much lower quote if you ask them to just fell the tree, so you can sell it to the highest bidder.

How long would someone have to wait to be able to make use of live oak, I would thought only the largest of sawmills would be able to process the tree properly to make it of any use to anyone.

I dont like chainsaws.

You can take it to a saw mill and have them saw it up for you into whatever types of boards you want.

Than you can let it dry or take it to a place that dry's lumber. I would suggest that you take it to a place that knows how to dry out lumber. If you let it dry out yourself it might take up to a year.

After that you can do what you want with it. Make all kinds of things.

This all depends on if the tree is in good shape or does it have all kind of insect holes and other things done to it.

OR just take the chain saw and saw it into fire wood and see it or use it. Laughing

Hi jason123,

I'm not too good at this but I'd say about 80 cm (2ft6ins) diameter and about 4 m (12ft) taller than our house :!:

Quotes are around £950 to take it down to just above ground level (plus another £200 to grind the stump to about 150mm (6ins!) below ground level. They take the wood but not the grindings Rolling Eyes

Various reasons - it cuts out a considerable amount of light, is overbearing, leans towards the house, is too close etc. Anyway having notified the council they have put an interim preservation order on it. If I had just gone ahead and had it chopped down it would (legally) be gone by now, but by notifying the Council they have stopped it. When the house was built 20 years ago they obviously didn't think it worth giving it a preservation order, nor as recently as last year. That is what you get for being up-front with local authorities. You are welcome to give it a big hug anytime. Wink
