Hi guys,

every time I turn on my central heating boiler the radiators make really annoying clicking and tapping noises for about 15 mins anyone got any ideas how to cure the problem, and if I need to bleed them is there a specific sequence i.e. upstairs or downstairs first.

Regards Terry

Does it do it while they get hot, stop then again when it cools?

Is it the pipes or radiators?

Plastic or copper piping?

is does it when they are heating up but once they are really hot it stops and it sounds like the radiators, and yes I'm sure they make noises when they are cooling down, copper piping

There should be plastic spacers on the radiator brackets, if the sound is metallic, otherwise it could be the pipes touching the fabric of the building, could be wood, plasterboard, maybe boxing in or the pipes are too tight in the notches.

What sort of noise/click

yeah its like a clicking sound that builds up then when the radiators are really hot it goes and returns as they are cooling down, we had the central heating installed last year and we didn't notice so much noise, I have bled the radiators about a month ago and I think its worse since.

If you can describe the noise better we may have a better idea, but really you need to localise it first.

Perhaps if you say how the pipes are run, e.g. in the floor, surface boxed in, do they go through wooden walls/studwork etc.

I always put tubular hairfelt around pipes that cross joists.

If they are Myson rads, then they wouldn't have had plastic inserts supplied. In fact there is no room to fit them on the brackets ::b Hence why I won't fit them anymore

Best plan would be to slide a dpc strips under the pipes where they go through the joists, and check the holes are not too tight where the tails go up to the rads.
