Looks like there is some glue or something on the thread?

Id give it all a good clean off, then screw a nut on if it will...is the nuts thread damaged?
Id say try a new nut, but looks like it may well be a fine thread, okay if you have a rough idea of the thread size and can get a new one, of a few to try.
Even if it doesnt screw on, i'd go with one of the above and pin the nut onto the shaft. The whole lot looks a bit chewed up there?
