I've just moved into a house that is covered in 12" X 12" Polyeterene Tiles which i have removed and has left large areas of glue. Please can someone advice on how best to remove these globs and the procedure and type of plaster to use for skimming the ceiling. Thanks and please bear in mind that i am a novice at this kind of work.

I know I keep posting to the plastering forum, but it seems that every time I do something in this bleeding front room of mine, I have another question!!!
Today I put up skim beads on the two outside corners of the fireplace (which is about 5 feet wide). The fireplace is a little uneven, and when I put a straight edge over the front, resting on the skim beads, it really shows the undulation. ...

Post subject: How to best remove dried plaster from plastic window frames Posted: Thu Oct 26, 2006 9:27 am |

We have just had the plasterers in and they have left traces of plaster stuck to the plastic clad window frames. It has dried on and seems very hard to shift, of course we are trying not to scratch the frames so any help or advise would be welcome.

Post subject: Plastering Over Tiles Posted: Mon Oct 23, 2006 5:34 pm |

Bathroom walls are currently tiled but the lower half juts out of the wall by approx. 10mm compare to the top half.. Tiles are proving extremely difficult to remove so is it possible to skim over the top half of tiles to match levels before retiling over the lot ?
I would much rather get back to base plaster but nothing short of a tactical nuclear device seems to shift these tiles :(

I've recently purchased a new flat and in the front room ceiling there are 15 (3 rows of 5) small recessed lights, about 100mm each in diameter. I want to get rid of these lights and replace with 2 normal light fittings, one at each end of the room.
So, I'm after advice really on the best way to cover these holes up, and whether this job is do-able by a novice DIYer or should ...

I've another question dear readers ..
9.5mm or 12.5mm thick plasterboard. Which should I use?
I'm guessing the thicker stuff for stud walls and the thinner stuff for dot and dab on blockwork.
Anyone got any views?????

Post subject: Lath & Plaster - Yes or No? Posted: Thu Oct 12, 2006 1:58 pm |

Hi.
I have a ceiling with very old plaster on it which I have stripped off but left the old laths in place. I fancied the idea of getting a plasterer to plaster the ceiling using these laths in the traditional manner. Does it make sense to do this?
Or should I a) Plaster board over the lath and then skim, or b) Get all the old lath off, plasterboard, then skim?
Anyone got any ...

Post subject: Plastering a wall in stages Posted: Thu Oct 05, 2006 9:33 am |

Is it common practice to skim an entire wall in one sitting? That is, should I be aiming to do this? I'm not sure if I can mix it/ slap it on all in one go/ half an hour. The alternative would be to do it in vertical stages; maybe two or three.
Any help much appreciated.

Post subject: Plastering over and around a new new plug socket Posted: Thu Oct 05, 2006 8:19 am |

I've got a small section of wall which has had a blown piece of plaster removed so now it's only brickwork. Luckily it's just over where the skirting would be, and so I have chiselled out a space for a double plug socket and channelled a space below for the wires to go.
It is best practice to just plaster over the wires? I'm not talking about safety here, but just what is normally done. ...
