I opened out the fireplace to reveal the builder's opening, hohum. The opening is inset into the wall, and the wall is plastered with normal gypsum plaster to the edge, albeit ragged at the edges now due to me opening out the fireplace. Were I to get the plaster tidied up at the edges, would it survive a stove?
The opening is 23" wide, the stove is 17" wide, and I can hold a hand ...

Post subject: Is it ok to plaster over existing plasterwork? Posted: Tue Feb 07, 2012 5:23 pm |

Hi,
I have had two different opinions from two plasterers about some work I have asked to be done for my kitchen and I'm looking for any advice as to who might be correct.
The work was to skim the walls on which the existing plasterwork is poorly done. I am just looking for a good quality smooth finish.
The first guy I had already offered him the job and he was here to do ...

Can any plaster give me a quick ball park man days estimate for the following to be skimmed onto plasterboard:
Room 1 56m2 of ceiling 80m2 of walls
Room 2 84m2 of ceiling 105m2 of walls
Assume that both are just plasterboarded boxes. Ceiling height is 2.4m
Approx how many bags of multifinish are needed for each room?

Post subject: Greasy Plasterboard Posted: Wed Jan 25, 2012 8:09 pm |

Hi
Our kitchen ceiling is currently artexed which is sagging, my husband says it's because the plasterboard was exposed for a time before I artexed it, though this was done some ten yrs ago and it's only recently started to sag. We want to remove the artex and plaster it, but he worries nothing will stick to the plasterboard because it's probably greasy and we'll just have the same problem, he thinks PVA won't work ...

Post subject: Is plaster really needed? Posted: Wed Jan 11, 2012 12:28 am |

I've just removed an old plasterboard wall to find that there's old tongue and groove wood work then some damp and crumbling lime plaster. Now the question i have is, can I remove the remainder of the old plaster and just re-point the wall with lime plaster and install insulation / vapour control layer/plasterboard without replacing the plaster. Is there any need for a complete layer of plaster on a wall that's 150 years old ...

Post subject: Can you stop plaster and tie in with exisitng? Posted: Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:52 pm |

I've recently had my dining room damp proofed. I have now applied the first coat of render (with waterproofer).
The exisitng plaster above the recently rendered areas is fine. I was wondering is there a method where i can plaster over the rendered areas, but not the existing plaster and still have a good enough finish to paint? Basically, I'm trying to get away with not plastering the whole room!
Thanks

Post subject: Repair plaster Posted: Sat Jan 07, 2012 10:44 am |

I had new windows installed last year and the fitters repaired the plaster under the sills with a dark grey, gritty material. I'm now wanting to repaint the rooms but not sure how to bring these repairs back to ready for paint. Do I just use a thin layer of regular filler as for holes or something else? Any advice appreciated. :help:
