PostPosted: Thu May 24, 2012 7:40 pm
Mrs MadRay is giving me the odd nudge and poke in the ribs about me taking a holiday....a couple of weeks for rest and relaxation to recharge the old batteries.

So how many of us self employed take a break? do our daily rates cover holidays?

Just something i was thinking about comparing self employment to being on the books for a firm

Quick one, need to make some sign bracketry, thinking about using tanalised...probably won't be maintained propetly.

But, it wants to be painted black....

Finish isn't overly important, its 15ft in the air.

Be alright? any tips/products?

Post subject: Flat Matt for woodwork?
PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2012 11:06 pm
Hi, about to build a load of shelving/cupboards etc & client requested F&B flat matt... however they say this is not very durable or suitable for bathrooms. Any other Matt eggshells about or would a varnish over the top do the trick?

Thanks in advance.

PS thinking about roller sleeves.. another painter recommended polyflock? for an almost sprayed finish.
Alternatively is this the time to invest in a spray set up like Fuji?

Post subject: Are you 'fully' insured ?
PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2012 2:47 pm
I am having a quiet day and not working, so am slowly working my way through all 89 pages of this forum...
I have come across many people talking about being 'fully' insured.

So, just what does that mean - obviously public liability insurance, but what else goes into becoming 'fully' insured ?

Post subject: Painting over a stained fence?
PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2012 2:36 pm
Hi,

I have recently moved into a new home (well, new to us). It has quite a large fence around the perimeter that I would like to freshen up with some paint/stain. It would cost too much money for us to replace the fence, so the only option we really have is to paint/stain it. The problem I have is that it is green, and IMO is not nice. I found some ducks back green ...

 Post subject: Estimates and quotes
PostPosted: Wed May 23, 2012 6:43 am
So who gives estimates or quotes and reasons??

Reason I ask is, I've been working for a 'character' for 3 weeks as they were paying very good money.
It's all coming to light as to how they win jobs etc.. Their estimates are quite considerably lower than their invoice given. They always put minimum 3 days extra on their invoice, but the jobs could have been completed well in the the frame. There is an ...
