Post subject: What brand of switches/sockets?
PostPosted: Mon Apr 08, 2019 9:08 pm
When we renovated the house few years ago we replaced all standard MK/BG electrical switches and sockets for 'One Electrical' polished chrome.

Over the years I have replaced countless switches, due to a faulty design on the switch rocker. I contact one electrical and they send me them out as they are covered under a thirty year gaurantee.

I am completely sick of doing this and they have stopped responding to my emails, rather than ...

Post subject: Washing machine in bathroom
PostPosted: Sun Apr 07, 2019 12:44 pm
There have been a few posts regarding this on here but I would like some up to date advice (for Wales if that matters).

I am converting a rather large downstairs utility room into a bathroom. It will have a toilet, sink and shower enclosure.

Ideally I would like the tumble drier & washing machine in there. They are both rated as suitable for bathrooms and obviously not inside any of the zones. I could ...

Post subject: Changing an extractor for outside light
PostPosted: Sat Apr 06, 2019 3:40 pm
The 1mm twin and earth cable that supplies the extractor fan does extend out to the wall enough to fix a waterproof junction box on the exterior wall, the problem is the outer sheath is stripped back, what’s best to use for re sheathing as it’s going through the exterior wall ? Also does the cable need to be in conduit through the wall ? And what’s the best way of filling the void?

If ...

Post subject: Can I replace non-timer extractor with a timed extractor?
PostPosted: Sat Apr 06, 2019 12:17 pm
Hi all

I'm after a little help with replacement of a shower room extractor. We had a Vent-Axia VASF100B which stopped working yesterday. It was operated via the light switch for one of the lights in the shower room, with an isolator switch outside of the room just for the extractor, not the light.

I decided to replace it with a VASF100T - the same unit but with a timer function. I'd assumed the wiring ...

Post subject: Odd garage cable feed
PostPosted: Fri Apr 05, 2019 9:18 pm
Well, odd to me. A friend is planning kitchen work and moving the washing machine to the garage. I was looking at the electricity currently in the garage and it appears to be ordinary 2.5mm2 cable in an HDPE pipe. Probably less than 10m from the consumer unit, but does go under a path at the side of the house.

I guess this was standard practice when the house was built a few decades ago, ...

Post subject: Unmarked Class II devices, can they be used?
PostPosted: Fri Apr 05, 2019 12:53 pm
In the main Class II have the double square device to show they are Class II, however be it the sticker has come off, or has never been fitted we see many Class II devices and with an ISO C8 plug/socket on the appliance it is quite clear it is Class II.

However with some it is not so cut and dried, a BA22d lamp holder can have an earth common with brass version, however ...

A 75 meter underground run from a house to a shed in which a 32 amp supply is required.
What size of armoured cable is required, and why.

This is all the info supplied,it's a homework-type thing.

Hope you guys can assist!
Many thanks,

Post subject: Old Alarms with older than 10 year old batteries
PostPosted: Sat Mar 30, 2019 9:53 pm
The alarm is an Advantage ZX6 that has neither been maintained or even armed for about 10 to 15 years. I've read a few articles that say when there's a power cut, if the batteries are dud, it will set the alarm off and that's why you hear alarms going off in the street during a power cut. I don't understand how that would be possible ? No power and dud battery ? This particular ...

 Post subject: Static electricity
PostPosted: Sat Mar 30, 2019 5:48 pm
I've had a couple of vehicles over the years which have given me a mild zap every now and again on exiting, so I know what this feels like.

I sometimes get this from the hot water at the kitchen sink. It doesn't happen often, but if I run the tap to allow the hot water to come through and then stick my finger into the stream of water to check the temperature I sometimes ...
