While I'm waiting for my new PVC windows to arrive I thought I'd knock out my old newell post that a previous owner butchered for 70's style.

I've looked online and can only find Canadian regs for the height of Newell posts and bannisters. Can someone point me in the general direction of Uk regs please?

Scottish regs are slightly different from the rest of the Uk regarding stairs but as above it’s 900mm minimum height for handrails(from the nosing point) and the same for a landing in a domestic property.

Thanks I saw that yesterday but I specifically wanted to know the height of the newell post. Is there a regulation height?

I assume the 900mm handrail height is the height from the tread? So the newell would have to be taller than 900m but is there a minimum or maximum height? I quite like having a tall newell post so just wondered how tall I could make it?

In Canada the newell post is 1" tall after the handrail (excluding the sphere shaped thing) See photo.

Kaspersky has blocked my attachment again. This is becoming a pain in the arse, hopefully those pesky Russians sort it out.

As far as I know there's no specific regulation as such . The minimum height would be the same as per the handrail as it's an integral part but anything above is largely cosmetic . I've seen newels finish an inch above the handrail and continue to the ceiling.

I made and installed the new Newell post and made a new stair tread as the previous tread cracked. I could have repaired it but decided to make a new one. I glued and screwed two pieces of 15mm ply together. the only thing I would have done differently is I wouldn't have routed the edge as I routed it too deep. I should have left it well alone.

I have two Newell posts on the middle landing to make and install over the weekend. lets hope the weather god is nice.
