Teachers to get new search powers Press Assoc. - Monday, July 14 08:36 am
Quote:
Teachers are to be given the power to search pupils for drugs and alcohol in a fresh crackdown on unruly behaviour in schools, the Government has signalled. Teachers will need stab vests as part of their kit.

The extension of existing powers to search pupils for weapons is a key recommendation of the latest report of the Government's top adviser on behaviour in schools, Sir Alan Steer.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls welcomed the report and indicated that ministers were ready to bring in legislation to implement the search powers which would also cover cigarettes and stolen property.

"I want to build on the powers we have already given teachers following Sir Alan's earlier recommendations on searching for weapons by extending these to cover drugs, alcohol and other inappropriate items," he said.

"It will ensure that everyone knows that a teacher's authority in the classroom is unquestionable and teachers are clear about their right to use them." That leaves male teachers open to spurious claims of abuse.

The Government has already introduced legislation to give schools the right to search pupils for knives and other dangerous weapons, as well as enabling them to screen youngsters using arch and wand metal detectors.

In his report, Sir Alan expresses particular concern about alcohol which, he says represents a bigger problem for most schools than drugs.

In other measures, he calls for schools to use new technology to help tackle truanting - sending texts or emails to alert parents if their children fail to turn up for lessons.

He also calls for better training for teachers to deal with unruly behaviour, with more detailed recommendations to be published in his final report due out in the autumn.

The publication of his report comes ahead of the launch on Tuesday of the Government's £100 million youth crime action plan by Mr Balls, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, and Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

I'm just waiting for the next news headline if this goes ahead..."Teacher knifed in classroom whilst searching a pupil"!

The governments ideas about kinfe crimes are absolutely absurd and are clearly a case of them clutching at straws.

If I was the PM I would make it quite simple- If you are caught with a knife or a gun then you do 5 years in the Army, mainly in Iraq for free and you don't get paid a penny for it.

The army don't want the little toe-rags, I was always impressed with the film Escape from New York, find an island and send them there, just like we did with Australia

until we make doing time hard then i'm afraid thing's will only get worse most of these a£43holes know that it is so cushy on the inside and they probably get more luxuries inside than they would working for it.
The saddest thing is the victims families get no justice (i don't mean these kids that get stabbed and then their picture is in the paper with them brandishing guns and knives like some wannabe gangster).

With Chav Plisken hot-wiring an Escort MkIV to escape :thumbright: I vote for Canvey Island - the people who live and go there tend to be the one syou would want to lock up anyway, so save on transportation

A recent news article up here was saying that scots, in particular people from Glasgow are twice as likely to be affected by knife crime than any other part of britian. Yet again another thing to be proud of

I would follow the idea of the film Battle Royal. Drug them take them to an island where there is guns and knives, and let them kill each other.

I would then send a video of the battle to the parents of the child.

What we need is a Chav specific virus - can't we genetically mutate Ebola or something like that.

Mind you I can't think of any virus or bacteria that would want to live on a Chav - even microbes have some standards.

Nah, like Tel says I've got a few mates in the forces and I wouldn't want them to have to share space with those worthless toerags

It's simple...

All coppers doing stop and search go out with shotguns. Catch a Chav with a knife on the street, kneecap the little f***er there and then in front of his 'posse'

Bring back the village stocks, so that the older, wiser generation (UHM members) that was brought up not dragged up can humiliate them as much as they desire by throwing their "excess food, as specified by the government"!!

Another idea, turn the waste of money, Milennium Dome into a modern day Colosseum, complete with aggressive wildlife. The chavs caught toting knives could be the victims. They wouldn't have horses with hunting hounds of course because this government is against hunting dumb animals! Another name for a group of chavs...a thicket!

I'm sure that chav specific viruses could be grown on Burberry.

Wots gone wrong with this place (UK)
When I was a kid I carried a sheath knive in a sheath on my belt.
Yes it made you "feel" big but the most harmful thing I did with it was sharpen the odd stick and used it to make "dens"
Even the rozzers saw it - no problem.
I blame the parents. I have 3 grown up kids ish 18,19,21
They would not dream of doing anything unruly with a blade, mainly cos of the reception they would receive from me I suppose.

Thinkin of emigrating!!

End of moan

What we should be doing is what TheTrician said the other day.

Rent a few 3rd world jails they need the money and we would save a fortune

My oh is a teacher locally and gets regular abuse from the local school kids when out and about, vile little, ignorant chavs, most racist, sexist kids anywhere. We even had the car vandalised by one of the little s*ds. Interestingly enough, over the border in Derbyshire the kids were brought up properly to respect teachers and are pleasant.
