Hello,

I have a single light switch (Pic1) which I will be replacing with a 5.8GHz motion sensor (Pic4).

The motion sensor requires a Neutral wire but the existing wall switch does not have one. I will therefore need to run a neutral wire from the ceiling light (Pic2) down to the motion sensor.

I have a few questions...

I have some flexible lighting cable I purchased from Maplins a few years ago (Pic3). It is dual core (blue/brown) 0.5mm with multiple stranded copper. Am I right in assuming 0.5 mm is 3 amps, up to 720 Watts? Is this wire considered adequate or does it need to be the solid 1mm single strand copper, which I already have? If this is adequate, I will simply strip off the outer sheath and use the blue wire as my new neutral.

My property was built in 1994 and has the old mains wiring colours. From a standardisation point of view, does my new neutral wire have to match the existing black neutral in the ceiling light, or is it okay to use blue?

Thank you for any info :)

Needs to be 1mm solid core. If you have the old coloured single (black) you can use that (i won't tell anyone) however if you use the blue then a sticky note should be applied to the consumer unit to the effect of "this electrical installation contains wiring colours to two versions of BS 7671, care should be taken when extending or otherwise altering"

That's not the exact wording, but you get the drift.

P.S.
If anyone is interested, I purchased some 1.5mm solid core from ebay. Very good quality cable which did the trick. I would highly recommend - £8.69 for 30 metres including P&P:
