i just wanted to say a big thanks to everyone for helping and advising me. I haven't completed my living room fully and there are still lots of other jobs to do such as hiding wiring, new sofas and new carpet, but i thought i'd post some pics of how it looks thanks to you guys so far...it's not the best, but considering i'm not an expert, i'm happy with it:-

What size bulbs did you settle for in the wall lights, because they still look a bit bright considering the chandelier is off?

Pattern is way off centre and too slightly high for me. That is just my eye though.

Well done if that is how you wanted it, as it isn't me looking at it.

That's high praise coming from RO

Did you know that if you wanted to you can buy chrome/ satin silver or black trim for that fire if it's the model I think it is?

That's assuming you don't prefer the brass obviously

Razor.....he did say to let him know our thoughts. Perhaps the decs didn't tell him to centre the pattern and leave whole motiff at the top......assuming he posted in there section for advice.

As he says, he is happy. Maybe the tip may help him in future projects.

I don't normally give a thats cack comment on DIY work but instead ignore the post lol. Not that I am implying this is cack. Still looks ok.

@ kellys_eye - As I have said mate, thats work in progress, lol. Spiral wrap won't look neat, so I need to order open-slot trunking from here:- http://www.cmwltd.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=45_62

@ dave.m - Unfortunately i stuck with 100w halogen lights, but i may change these at a later to ceramic lights which allow me to have energy bulbs

@ razor - Actually yes i would like to buy satin chrome trim, but i don't know what make my gas fire is or where i can get hold of this trim...any help mate would be appreciated, thanks

@ royaloakcarpentry - i wasn't adviced and i didn't realise that the pattern was not centered to be honest and i followed this guide which has no mention of sorting out patterned paper:-http://www.diyhowto.co.uk/projects/wallpaper.htm ...all i know is that i marked a vertical line in the centre of the chimney breast, then i wallpapered on the left of it, working out towards the right side of the chimney breast. May i ask what you mean by centered pattern or what you mean by "too high" ?

Take the controls cover off and there will be a label in there with a model name and hopefully a number starting with GC this would help

Some really constructive comments. I'd never have picked up on the pattern alignment but it is obvious once pointed out. Put that in the bank for your next room. Nothing personal but I just don't get the craze for putting the TV on the chimney breast. My preference is to have it at eye level and not in a position where you're looking up at it..........or am I missing something?

That guide is a general one. You do not always put a plumb line centre and then paper to left and right of it, sometimes you need work out centre then measure back half width of paper and hang to this new line. Depends on the pattern and how it will work out in relation to the chimney, pier, column etc etc.

Pattern is too high because part of the motif has been cut away.

So if you centre the pattern you would have had 6 inches (for example) from edge of breast to centre of large motif whether measured from left hand or right hand side. If the paper were dropped an inch or so then a complete motif would be shown at the top.

I have to agree with Southwood about TVs above the fireplace, but if I had to have one there, I would want plain wallpaper behind it so that there are no distractions when viewing the crap that is sent down the aerial to us.

I think what ROC means is that the big shape in the pattern should have been centred in the chimney breast and it would have looked a bit better if the big shape was full at the top of the wall instead of the top couple of inches being missing.

dave

Edit, Whoops, ROC was still on line and beat me to it.

Thanks for your advice guys.

Regarding the wallpaper...To be honest, neither am i an expert, nor have i noticed it but since its already done, i think it'd be a shame to rip it off again and correct it right now, so i might give it a bit of time and if it irritates me, then i'll get it done.

Regarding the tv - I have i think approx 6 - 7 inches gap between the mantle, so when i do the wallpaper on chimney breast, i may also move the bracket down to a more reasonable level, although so far its not too bad...don't forget, i sit approx 8-9 feet away from the tv, so the height isn't an issue at the moment.

@ Razor - the only info i found is this, so any idea mate?:-

You can get them in black, brass or polished steel from the manufacturers here:

FEF uk ltd 01246 823333

And you don't need a gas fitter to swap them over
