Open regedit, by going to Start -> Run -> type regedit and press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam. Right-click on the ShellNoRoam key, choose Export and save the file (This backs-up the current settings. To be extra safe create a system restore point). Delete the two keys below. Reboot and re-set your folder options.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Do you have “Remember each folder’s view settings” ticked in TOOLS-->FOLDER OPTIONS-->VIEW TAB (Advanced settings)

Up to XP SP2 Explorer will only remember 200 local folder settings. With XP SP2 it will remember 5000 settings. By deleting the reg keys I mentioned in the earlier post you'll reset the views and the view count. More information is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813711

You may have hit the nail on the head in that case Rich.

At the last count there was 170,000 files and folders.

Ish, and growing.
