Yeah - be prepared to get very wet You need to dig down first and find out what the pipe is made of. If it's plastic then you'll be able to clamp it shut a bit, if it's lead then check with your water supplier as they may do it for free, if it's steel then you're going to get very very wet doing it live.

Thanks Guys, a little problem today I lifted the steel stop tap cover and gave it a wiggle and hey its loose in my hand I then dig down thinking it must be down here somewhere, but nope it wasnt... so i went under the house and i can see the old lead pipe that has been cut at some point from what i would presume used to connect to the said stop tap that i cannot find... then i noticed a blue pipe coming in from 2 foot away that looks like a newish water pipe...
Could this be that the old lead pipe has been cut off along with the stop tap?
I do have a stop tap at the top of my drive on the foot path, is this now what you would expect to be my "new" stop tap???
I also have a stop tap in my kitchen, i take it that as long as i have access to both of these i will be able to turn my water off
My worry is that there is another one somewhere else near my front door and shortly my extension will be built and i obviously do not want to build over any stop tap, well thats my concern anyway

I reckon that the one at the top of your drive would be the new one - lift the cover, turn it off and see. It's certainly where I'd expect it to be.

Sounds like the old lead has been replaced.
Why not turn the stoptaps off and check they are ok.

My bro-in-law did this a while back. My little project has a water meter that is within the boundary and (he used to be a plumber for Welsh Water) just dug out by the water meter and replaced the whole pipe from their onwards for plastic - not sure about the situation if the meter/mains stop tap is in the road
