I'm going for Fireman.
Supposed to work 40 odd hours a week but spend a quarter of those tucked up in bed.
At the most he'd get his hoses out for 4 hours a week to actually put a fire out.
Most have a second job paid cash i hand.
Nice work if you can get it, me thinks

To a certain extent I agree with your comments and so do the management which is why, a couple of years ago, they tried to re-shape the fire service - remember all the strikes.
However, every so often they have to deal with a major incident

Not knocking the service in general. I appreciate that they do a good job when called upon.
I just don't like the 'we're firefighters and above critisism' attitude.

The two firemen in my family wouldn't agree with you, having to deal with horrendous accidents and fires where lives are lost, at any time of the day or night is traumatic.

tell them to change career then
what did they expect when they joined, just to sleep all night
next we will have someone moaning that they joined the army and had to fight in a war

With every horrific low there is a high, saving lives probably enhances job satisfaction.

The point being made is that they are NOT dealing with 'horrendous accidents and fires' for the full shift - no one questions the value of them then. However, most of the time they are NOT dealing with 'horrendous accidents and fires' and it is this time that could be put to better use. This was what the strike was about, the management wanted them to do other things in between risking their lives and the unions wanted the firemen to carry on as normal and put their feet up.
In a number of countries the fire service also carry out paramedic duties when they are not fighting fires.

I know of a fireman who retired after 25 years at 50ish having never got his hoses out in anger.
I don't doubt that once every 20 years a fireman will actually be in a situation when they are in danger but to adopt this 'hero' status is pretty much emotional blackmail

Footballers. They could all be sacked and life would still go on.
