footballers bring joy to millions each week so I think you are wrong on this one |
and they damn well should "bring joy", getting paid millions a year to kick a ball around
If by overrated, we are looking at Value For Money, then Footballers are top of my list for overrated by a long way _________________ If you have a son, DO NOT name him after a verb ....

Over paid, over rated, 22 men kicking an imitation pig's bladder across a field. I'm really impressed! _________________ Never be afraid to ask, that's how we learn. |

Yep, got to agree that a tiny percentage of professional footballers are over paid pampered pre-madonnas.
On the other hand the other 99% are hard working individuals who earn a very modest wage. |

I've nothing against the ones who play for fun or the amateurs but the professionals don't deserve to be idolised. They earn silly money. _________________ Never be afraid to ask, that's how we learn. |

Lots of people earn silly money....actors, politicians, captains of industry etc.
Its market forces....the top.001% of footballers get the 'silly' money but thats 'cos most clubs want them playing for them so they have to pay over the odds. This is the same issue with the housing market....people pay over the odds 'cos not many houses come up for sale in the desirable areas altho' we are experiencing a correction in housing market at the moment |

All the professionals?
92 league clubs. 20 in the Prem. 25 players per team. Top 4 teams have 50% of players earning 50k +. Thats 50 players earning millionaire salaries. That's 50 out of 2,300.
2%ish. |

This is from 2 years ago ....
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2006/apr/11/newsstory.sport10
The average Premiership footballer earns a basic salary of £676,000, according to a survey published today
Premiership wages are up by an average of 65% since 2000, with almost 30% now earning a basic salary of more than £1m
A player on the average Premiership wage of £676,000, or £13,000 a week, would typically receive appearance money of £5000 per game depending on his contract
Players also receive signing-on fees, cup bonuses, goal bonuses and an end of season performance bonus if the club finishes in a strong league position. All these bonuses could mean as much as an extra £9000 a week.
And the sum drops dramatically in the Championship, where the average basic wage is £195,750 a year
The League One average is £67,850, while in League Two average earnings hover around the £50,000 mark
So the players in the top two divisions have to scrape along at an average minimum of £200,000
Premiership players typically get £5,000 bonus for being good enough for work, (and still get £13,000 in a week when they do FA) _________________ If you have a son, DO NOT name him after a verb ....

How much is a ticket? I park on the retail park next to Mansfield's football ground and there were lots of families going in. It must be pricey. _________________ Never be afraid to ask, that's how we learn. |

Weren't footballers' earnings capped decades ago? I vaguely remember a footballer's wife telling me about her Derby County player husband's poor pay. _________________ Never be afraid to ask, that's how we learn. |
