Well, the first bit anyway
I have a Windows Smartphone and I registered for a thing called "M:Metrics" - this is a piece of software that logs the amount of GPRS data used per month on your phone (note: not anywhere you go or anything like that - just the quantity -bit like a mileometer on a car)
This is sent automatically to this company and in return they send you money
No idea why they do really, but I signed up anyway like I said - Got a £10 cheque from them for signing up and in the post today got a £30 cheque for the last 6 months (£5 a month is the reward)
This is not a scam, I do nothing (and actually forgot about this until the cheque arrived this morning ) and my bills are no different to before.
If you want to have a look, goto http://www.mobilepanel.co.uk/aboutpanel.aspx
If you don't have a Smartphone running Windows, think you are out of luck
If you think these things are scams, fair enough, don't bother either _________________ If you have a son, DO NOT name him after a verb ....

Hmm - that is a good question the link to register takes you to a page that you need a name and password to carry on
as you saw from my post, I joined ages ago and don't recall exactly what the process is - send an email to this address support@mobilepanel.co.uk and they should be able to help.
Just to add - I'm nothing to do with these guys, except they send me money for nothing and I wanted to pass the word on to my fellow UHMers _________________ If you have a son, DO NOT name him after a verb ....

I'm not absolutely 100% sure, but I think this company use your phone details to track you shopping/window shopping. So if you go to a shopping centre (mall) it tracks what shops you've been to and how long you've been there etc
Big brother is watching you. Do I care? Bloody right I do! _________________ If you can't say anything nice about someone, say nothing

I guess it could be possible the cell you are nearest may be tracked (I doubt it, though) but that would be the limit.
That is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own - no probs with that _________________ If you have a son, DO NOT name him after a verb ....

I heard a report on BBC Five Live, this afternoon, which revealed that shoppers movements were being tracked at a shopping centre (mall), by monitoring their mobile phones.
It's taking place at Gunwharf Keys, Portsmouth; which for those who don't know this neck of the woods, is an upmarket shopping centre (with many designer retail outlets and lots of restaurants and bars) on the banks of Portsmouth Harbour, in the City centre.
The Spinnaker Tower is there too.
Apparently, the centre owners are monitoring active mobile phones (switched on) and are tracking them from shop to shop, bar, restaurant wherever; thoughout the complex. The idea being to survey visitors habits (for what purpose they don't specify!).
The operators claim that they fall outside data protection legislation by using this information, because records are not kept?
Next time we go there, I'll be turning my phone off.
Where else is this technology being used commercially?
It does make you wonder. _________________ If you can't say anything nice about someone, say nothing

I think they may fall foul of that one the act of recording information is sufficient I think
