Anyone know what size of spanner I'd need to buy to open this tap to replace the washer?

How about a 12" adjustable?

The span is about 40mm - how do I check the maximum jaw opening of particular spanners, on-line?

Make sure you wrap a few turns of masking tape around the nut to avoid scratching it up

I don't do a lot of plumbing and because of that I don't have a vast amount of tools but I have always managed to get around things by using a pair of pump pliers and because you have a big nut to undo I would buy a pair of 12" pump pliers.
They will open wide enough and should be the only tool you will need.

I agree with DWD that you should wrap up the tap shroud to stop it getting scratched.

See this page and choose one that is wide enough. http://www.bahco.com/en/s/adjustable-wr ... -13-54-a7/ Then search for it to see who has it and how much it costs. There are cheaper makes than Bahco.
