I remember Hitch mentioning making a metal bed, I made one once out of 60mm angle, 4 lengths of 60mm scalloped box section, topped each post with fancy collar and ball from Rourkes, I dont have any pics, but what I did was make it 6' wide and 6'6" long, then the fun began finding a mattress Bang Head

There is a company in Bury that will make a mattress to measure, cost me about £200 delivered Thumbright

The guy said they can go up to about 25' square if you want.

Ideal Jas, i just got the matress changed for a King, and made two new side runners. 5mm thick plate, pressed up into a strong section to take the wooden slats. A sort of 'G' shape.

If he bedroom were tidy i'd take a picture Laughing Very similar to this one
I used 60mm tube for the legs, capped with large knuckles. And 20mm solid for the scrolls.

You should think about making and selling commercially. Thumbright

I bought a couple of iron beds about 10 years ago and they were basically tubes for the legs as you said, 4 lengths of angle-iron, solid 10mm rods for the end and head boards and some scrolly pineapple type things as features, plus a handfull of bolts to put together.
Probably only half a days work for someone who knows what they are doing.

The trouble is, people see a 'iron bedstead' in argos, which is all 20guage tubes tacked togher for £40, and cant see the difference between that and a proper solid one for £250 Confused

I tried to get into that game Hoovie, one job I was asked to design was a wine rack, I fell in love with the Rourkes catalogue, its free (or used to be, when you order over £100 Hitch Thumbright ) I showed them my design it was all 12mm decorative 100mm ID rings, the cost of parts was getting close to £200, I informed them it would take about 3 days to make, a slight exageration but put a final figure on of £400. I rang them 2 weeks later asking if they had made their minds up, errrrrrrrrrrrr we bought 2 at ikea for £14.

Original bespoke designed ironwork no, can you see it in 5 million kitchens across europe, probably, you get what you pays for.

Hmm - that is sad - you can SEE the difference between the proper ones and the cheap crap at 100 yards - with your eyes closed!

I think my sister bought once of the argos/ikea type ones - looks gash.

The ones we bought are like the ones Hitch linked to and you guys described - give youself a hernia if you tried to move it on your own!

My brother is in the wrought iron gate game and he gets the same problems with people asking why his stuff isn't £14.99 for a pair of gates as that is what they saw in the sunday sport mag or whatever.

UPDATE: Guess what! just looked at the brochure for mine (sad - 10 years ago and still got it!) and they're from a company in Wincanton! you must know it, Hitch? Mill Side Forge in Stoke Trister
Beds look as good as they did when we bought them - would have gone through 5 ikea ones by now Sad
