I have got to the boarding stage now, on an old house built before tape measures and levels existed (well it seems like that)

my ceilings are around 9ft high, the biggest being about 28m2 (how do you do a little 2) and I am doing them on my own with 8x4 1/2" board.

My question is.... is it acceptable/wise to make my own mending plates from 100mm wide 12mm ply (or whatever you suggest) to join the unsupported ends.

It will make the job so much more difficult if I have to cut all the boards to size.

Regards and thanks for looking

Not sure what you mean.

Mending plates are 1.5mm thick and therefore fit under the edges of the boards. Not sure how 12mm ply would replace them?

I cannot find mending plates anywhere at the moment. Anyone found any. I have bought about a hundred in the last year or two and they have failed to replenish their stock.

Thank you for replying to me again jozeffo

I must have got confused with the name somewhere, I was talking about 100mm wide ply 4ft and 8ft lengths screwed along the unsupported butt joints of plaster board where they don't finish on a joist.

I have not seen a metal mending plate what are they like and what are they used for ?

Oh i see what you mean.

Mending plates are for overboarding and doing what you are trying, hence why they are so thin.

You could do that with ply strips, but it might cause problems when the ceiling is skimmed because it will offer little resistance.

If you can use 300mm wide offcuts and other waste sheet materials then it would be ok. If you use two rows of screws at the edge of the joist and the end of the board, you will have extra security.

It might be easier to just cut the plasterboard, but if you have plenty of sheet offcuts, then it should work in principle.

Thank you again,
I will have a look out for some mending plates as I have some overboarding to do as well, If I find any at the westgate end I will give you a shout, and could bring some back with me if you want, how much is a reasonable price for them ?

Mending plates are about £ 2.50 each, but I have only ever found them in dry lining suppliers and not always then.

I will always take a few spare ones off your hands, although i can order them in if necessary I think
