I put a video clip onto a memory stick for a friend, and said you can plug this into your TV and watch it.

The friend can't watch it, and I am thinking they were expecting a pop up icon to appear when they plugged it in.
They tried it on a pc.....still no joy, it said it was not formatted.

I tried an identical stick in another pc, and no pop up icon appeared

I went into "my computer" and there it was listed and all was well.

I tried today on another friends pc it wouldn't even recognise the memory stick :cb

But it always works on my pc here. I just tried it on a very old pc with win xp, it doesn't work. any thoughts as to why?

The stick is a "sandisk" and does have the sandisk software

Question.
When you put a memory stick in your pc or mac does it come up with a pop up saying some thing like what would you like to do / shows what is on the stick?

Have you tried a memory stick in your tv? I have to go
menu>media browser>video

If you have tried it, is that roughly what you do?

Possibly related to the lack of 'thanks button' on your PC.......

How can I even contemplate saying thanks to a reply like that? I do give thumbs ups now and again.

Could be it's needs re-formatting, sometimes they kind of get stuck to one computer, I have had it happen before, a re-format worked.

Does the TV have to be set to receive stuff from a memory stick rather than the aerial (or wherever)?

I know that (in theory) the TV in my kitchen does, although I've never tried it

:thumbleft: for the replies.

Tried formatting :cb works on my stuff not others.

To watch something on TV that is on a memory stick, you plug it in and "point" (Not literally, you tell the TV via the remote control options where it should look) I think the person who tried did not know that.

The video is in mp4. (But its getting the tv or pc to recognise it that seems to be the problem)

Which file system is the stick formatted in? I believe you could do NTFS or FAT on WXP. It may be that the other TV's etc. are expecting to see the one that the stick isn't formatted in(ie stick is in NTFS and TV's expecting FAT or visa versa).

Thanks, TBH I don't know, but I have only tried 3 TVs, worked on all of them (one did take a few mins for it to load) Its the computers that are causing me grief, they don't see the memory stick :dunno: I did one a while ago for another friend, worked first time.

If 'your' PC assigns it a drive letter this can 'stick' when carried over to another PC - and if that PC has already allocated that drive letter to something then your stick won't show as it 'conflicts'.

Try looking at it through the memory management console and allocating it (say) drive X and see what happens.

I usually buy sandisk sticks but when it came to copying my W10 op system, incase of a crash, my learned friend told me to avoid them as there was a reprted conflict between the 2, just saying as I think the above replies are spot on; my Lenovo ideapad 100 plays MP4 and .MOV and the same ones play on my Linux PC, can't test on tv as not home.
The other anomally with my W10 lappy is that after recording on a stick elsewhere, when 1st plugged in, it gives a fault and need to scan / repair messages, given the go ahead it is then almost instant and plays okay whether that is a reformat or not as it plays good but repeats after the next alien recording.

Not that I know anything about this, but does the memory stick have to be 'closed' as you do with DVD recordings, before it will play on another machine?

Some TV's that have a usb slot, have the usb slot so it can be updated manually.. Nothing to do with the ability to watch videos on usb stick. My tv has 3 x usb slots. I can watch videos on a usb stick, I can also plug a mouse and a keyboard into it. My neighbour has a tv with 1 usb slot, but can't watch videos off a usb stick. Plugging a mouse or keyboard into this slot has absolutely no effect on the tv either.

Make sure the usb stick is formatted in fat32 and NOT in ntfs

Compress it down to dvd, less headaches that way

Interesting and much appreciated replies. :salute:

It works here
However I have now put the same mp4 onto a memory stick that is NOT sandisc brand, as always, it works here, and I even tried it on a TV of "some person I dont know" (don't ask) but it worked first time on his TV  so I am wondering is it as aeromech3 said.

I also like kellys_eye's suggestion, but on a laptop it was a different letter than on a desktop (Not tried it on a mac)

So a big thanks :thumbleft: to everyone. I can't tell you any more as the stick in question is with the person who has the problem, and I know they are busy today, so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

:thumbright: for you help and suggestions.
