I was going to re-route a mains water pipe in my kitchen but when I opened the metal cover outside to turn the water off there is no tap inside. I dug down as far as I could and it is just full of clay.

Is this a common practise? The house is about 30 years ols and I'm now stumped as to how I'm going to switch off the mains supply.

Yeah you're right. It was there all along  Buried under about a foot of clay and gravel. Seems like the water hasn't been turned off for 30 years

Ease the valve both ways a few times to free it up.

MadManMoon - while you are re-routing your mains water pipe you might want to consider fitting an electric automomatic stopcock so that you can easily turn off your mains fee in future and also have the device monitor your water flow and turn off your mains automoaticaly if there is a flood risk. See the product at REMOVED SPAM - RichAndo
