Now then all,
I'm putting an extension on the back of the house and found that the mains water pipe and water meter is going to be in the way. The shared pipe runs along the back of 4 houses and is Lead. I phoned the water board and was told that because the pipe is a shared pipe on our propertys it would be our responsibility to move it.
I'm hoping that some one might know if theres a way of getting round the water board by maybe getting them to replace the Lead pipe because of safety issues?
Any advise or suggestions would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

If you can convince the neighbours of the need to dig an 750mm trench through their gardens, I would think the supplier would talk about a new connection

Sadly I can't see that happening as I don't get on with one of our neighbours.
It's 2 pairs of semi's so am hoping the water board will put in new connections from the main road down the side of each property. I suppose it depends on how helpfull the guy will be when we have the site meeting. There had been a suggestion of cutting the pipe in the back garden and joining it again with plastic pipe that would go round the extension but we would be in the same situation with regards of some the pipe being lead.

Thats what I done at my country cottage, which shares with 6 others.

Fortunately me and the church are first in line, so I renewed everything upto our boundary in plastic, and let them get on with it

Verne says: POSTED by Phill

We had a shared pipe which routed through our house to next door.

I upgraded to my own supply but next door would not pay, so the old pipe stayed where it was. It also became the neighbours problem, although I'm not sure what would happen if it leaked.

You are responsible for the pipe once it leaves the mains - so I had to dig a trench from the road to my house and supply the pipe. I also had to pay £470 for the water company to join it into their mains. Best thing we ever did, as the shared supply was rubbish in terms of flow.

Good news was that we got a new neighbour and their first job was to run ina new pipe, so I pulled out the old one just in case.

If your old pipe is going to be right in the way then shift it! just re-route it around the building plot - you can get lead to plastic joint connectors. If your going to the expense of building work then get a new supply for yourself anyway.
