I'm in the process of removing an airing cupboard to give us more room in our bathroom. I've come to a halt because there's a loop of heating pipe that goes to floor level and back up into the roof. It's not connected to radiators in there it just loops. It has a cut off valve about a third of the way down on each pipe and another valve near the floor.
I want to know whether we can just turn everything off and take it back to the loft or whether there is a good reason for the pipe configuration, apart from heating the airing cupboard.
We have a combi boiler and we live in a bungalow if that aids an answer.
Thanks,
Louise |

Hi Louise,
A picture would be really useful.
I assume there was once a hot water tank in this cupboard?
When it goes to floor level, what does it do? Loop up or terminate? Where does it originate? Down from the roof/loft or up from the floor?
Are they no branches coming from it? It's just a single pipe with valves but no terminated/blank branches from it?
Personally I can't think of a reason for it other than heating the cupboard which would be nice for hot towels or lazy heating engineer not pulling it back :) , but I'd really prefer to see it to comment further. _________________ Jaeger.

Hi Allan,
Many thanks for the reply. I'll try to post some pictures.
The bungalow is 13 years old and has always had a combi boiler, so there's never been a hot water tank in the cupboard which is only about 18" deep.
There's nothing coming off the pipes at the bottom they just make a 'u'shape into the cupboard and go back up into the loft where they're joined to the rest of the heating system.

If it is simply, dropping from either feed or return and into the cupboard and continuing the feed or return then I'd remove the 'U'.
The other consideration may be the valve at the bottom was for easy drainage of that part of the system, might be worth considering that when you remove this U? _________________ Jaeger.

That is exactly what my husband has been thinking. My camera's on the blink so I've failed to get the photos. But you've just confirmed what we thought.
Thanks.

Who said Bathroom were easy eh Bludall
I would want to have a look above the airing cupboard before cutting it out. |

Thanks Allan.
Bathstyle,
Do you think there's more to it than a loop on the heating system?
The other suggestion from my husband was to just re-route the pipes so that they face the door rather than the left-hand wall, allowing the cupboard to be much smaller depth wise.

Have a look in the loft , I reckon it can just be cut out in the loft space.
Difficult to tell without a loft pic |

I'll have to get the ladder and have a look.
Watch this space.
